Instagram isn’t sending your verification code: what to try
When Instagram’s code doesn’t arrive, it’s usually one of a few things. Work through these in order.
1. Check the number
Look at the number on the code screen, country code included. One wrong digit sends the code to someone else.
2. Look somewhere other than your texts
Instagram can send codes by WhatsApp or email as well as by text. On the code screen, look for an option to get the code another way, then check WhatsApp and your email, spam folder included.
3. Wait before asking again
Asking for a new code again and again can make Instagram stop sending for a while. Wait for the timer to run out, then ask once.
4. Check your phone isn’t filtering it
Phones can file texts from unknown senders separately: look in the Unknown Senders or Spam list in your messages app.
Locked out of your own account?
If Instagram wants a code sent to the number on your account and it never comes, use Instagram’s own recovery: on the login screen, tap the option to get help logging in and follow the steps. It can confirm it’s you another way, by email for example. A different number won’t help here, because the code has to go to the number on the account.
Signing up for a new account?
You can sign up with an email address instead of a phone number. If Instagram still asks for a number, a one-time number can take that code: ours cost $1, and the $1 goes back to your balance if no code arrives within 20 minutes. Add your email and turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app straight after, because the number won’t receive codes later. Get a number for Instagram.
